(More customer reviews)After reading the other reviews, and with my son really wanting an Optimus, and having a pretty good experience with the other Animated Transformers toys (Starscream is super-easy, and Bulkhead is no problem), I got this without telling him. After futzing with it a bit, I think he'll be able to handle it once I tell him how. Here's the trick - do Step 1, then do Step 3, 4 & 5. When the upper body is done, then hook the wheels in like Step 2.
Now, in order to do Step 5, the key is to hold his front chest plate with one hand, then pull the back tab straight back with the other. He'll start to tuck in. While he's in mid-tuck, line up his arms properly, then tuck him the rest of the way in. Put the top tab down until it locks (if you look at it from the side, you'll see how it locks).
To robot-ize him, put your thumb on the Grey back for some leverage, and flick the little red button (like in the instructions) to open him up. Works like a charm.
Not intuitive, but no problem once practiced 2 or 3 times.
Now my son (almost 4 yr) can do it. He still has problems locking it sometimes, but can usually do it.
