Bruticus Maximus is a big combiner type transformer made of 5 different robots. He's got good points and bad points so I'll go with a Pros and Cons format here:
Pros:
5 and 1 - If you buy this guy you're not just getting 1 robot your getting 5 complete transformers that each have a vehicle and robot mode as well as combine to form the larger robot. I think this is a plus especially for kids as it adds playability to the set. Both modes are sturdy and nice looking if a bit simplistic.
Combined Size - When combined into Bruticus he's a nice large toy about the size of a leader class. Of course that's not "to scale" so to speak but cost would be through the roof if it was.
Versatility - You have your little helicopters, tanks and truck to play with, or you can turn them into robots, their clear orange guns can be connected in different configurations and they have little "energon bits" that can be connected if wanted. In combined mode any of the robots can be connected in different arm and leg configurations for slightly different looks.
Easy Transformation - All aspects are pretty simple due to the small size of the robots. This is a big plus for younger kids and even nice for an adult not to have to go at it like a Rubiks Cube for once.
Cons:
Lack of Variety - The vehicles are one missile truck that makes the main torso and head then two identical tanks and two identical helicopters make up the rest. The robot modes of these latter vehicles are the same as well, only the colors vary among these twins.
Scale - Of course scale is off with other transformers - these being smaller than normal so as to not make the combined robot too big - but the scale is off among themselves as well. You've got this missile truck that's bigger than a tank and these helicopters that are the same size as these tiny tanks when they should be huge in comparison. It might have made more sense to have a big helicopter as the main body but that's not the case. The best you can do is to pretend they are some kind of mini-helicopters and tanks.
Posing - Don't get me wrong, you can pose Bruticus in a couple of cool looking ways, but that's about it. In combined mode he's not very flexible to say the least. There is no elbow articulation, no ankle. It's pretty much head, shoulders, waist, hips and knees.
So four to three, that's an average to above average (3 ½) score.
On a side note once you've followed the directions the first time you can start experimenting with different configurations of the arms and legs. You can mix and match or make the tanks the legs and helicopters the arms or vice versa. I've found that if you make the helicopters the arms that you can modify their configuration in order to get some forced elbow articulation out of them. I'll post pictures of this soon if anyone is interested.
