(More customer reviews)Here we have another line of 10" figures based on the NFL's most popular players. But instead of the cartoonish look of the previous line, we get "mechanized" versions of Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Peyton and Eli Manning, and Brett Favre, who is oddly enough representing the Green Bay Packers with this figure despite having signed with the New York Jets last year after his short-lived retirement and is now signed with the Minnesota Vikings. It looks like they're going for the nostalgia factor with the Favre figure, though I can't imagine that many more vehement Cheeseheads will want to pick this figure up after all the bad blood Favre has inspired since leaving the team.
It seems to me that this line is trying to capitalize on the popularity of the recent blockbuster film Transformers 2. The figures actually remind me of the robotic Fox Sports football mascot "Cleatus, " who can be seen occasionally during a football game aired on Fox and also received his own 10" action figure a while ago. I don't know why someone would want an action figure based on a television mascot (it would be like someone wanting an action figure of the NBC peacock). But if you picked up Cleatus, you can get your favorite Pro-Bot to pose with him on your shelf.
One thing that kinda puzzles me is the special feature for these Pro-Bots. With the push of a button, the helmeted robot head flips over to reveal the very human heads of Brady, Romo, the Manning brothers, and Favre. So they're humans underneath the robotic exterior? Or are they part robot and part human like Robocop? Or are they completely robotic except for their heads? And if that's the case, did someone decapitate these players and stick their heads on robotic bodies? I think I'm thinking way too deep into this, but it's one of those weird action figure features that don't make much sense, kinda like action figures of Batman wearing a bright orange Batsuit. I guess the only real purpose is to be able to put the players' names and faces on the box, but I think just having a Dallas Cowboys Pro-Bot or a New York Giants Pro-Bot without an associated player would be more timeless rather than attaching the figure to a player who can switch teams or retire. Then you can make Pro-Bots for EVERY team instead of limiting the number of teams they can represent by being forced to pick a famous player's visage to stick on them.
Anyway, despite my criticism, the figures do look good, and kids and football fans won't mind having a robotic football player to play with. Watch out, Cleatus!
