I bought this alternator with birthday money on a kind of impulse. Haven't bought a toy, let alone a Transformer, for years upon years. Very glad I did though. Prowl is a mighty Autobot tactician who can disguise himself as a realistic looking Acura RSX. The car rolls along smoothly on rubber tyres, and magnets connect the front two wheels so that they turn together. The doors open, the bonnet (that's what Americans call the 'hood', I think,) opens to reveal an engine, and the headlights look like proper headlights.
As a robot, Prowl is as sturdy as his previous incarnation (the original 1984 toy,) but far more articulate. He's lost the phallic missile launchers on his shoulders, and instead wields a translucent red police nightstick, along with a sort of pistol (the car mode's engine). He can beckon, point, clench his fist and balance his nightstick jocularly on his shoulder. Unfortunately, he can't kneel, duck or run, or place his hands together for a more accurate shot.
Bits do tend to fall off in the struggle to transform him, but the process is engaging in its complicity (people have abandoned conversations with me as I sit, engrossed in the puzzle,) and everything is easily stuck back on. There is a knack to it, and I find myself taking pride in knowing when to and when not to force the doors, take a step back etc.
The headsculpt is brill. Tip his head down, and he's growling. Tip it up and he's got a wry smile. Something to do with the way the light catches the mouth-notch and the ridge above the eyes.
It's frustrating to find that so many of the people buying Alternators are either parents mistakenly believing the toys are suitable for their seven year olds, or dealers buying to sell on to collectors at stolen-art style prices. I even begrudge the collectors to some extent - since using the model purely for display completely negates its key feature, and their canyon-deep pockets are causing the dealers to bump the prices up so much. It is a toy. And it's giddy fun. But toys and giddy fun aren't just for chiddlers.
Now if only I could get a Wheeljack and Red Alert...
